Hi everyone, Mouthful of Dust is a web experience built with Three.js by Creative Studio | State Library Victoria in Australia. It focuses around artefacts of the infamous Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.
The project presents 3D photogrammetry scans of Ned Kelly artefacts from State Library Victoria’s collection. Users are able to examine the historical objects in forensic detail - including travelling inside Kelly’s suit of armour to look out through his helmet, or examining personal engravings on his rifle butt.
The experience combines nearly 5,000 photogrammetry images of the armour, rifle, boot and death mask along with high-res scans of the Jerilderie Letter with new commissioned writings from leading Australian authors. Users can interact with the 3D models or experience them as spatial audio-guided films, accompanied by narration from the writers themselves.
The project also features a Gaussian splat reconstruction of the Redmond Barry Reading Room, where Kelly’s armour is now permanently displayed.
This was a really fun project to work on, I have been keen to explore using Gaussian splats as scene backgrounds and this was the perfect opportunity.
