The first of its kind: the virtual Eurovision Song Contest Rotterdam 2021. We figured… if the world cannot come to Rotterdam, Rotterdam will come to the world! A virtual event where millions of visitors can indulge themselves in this iconic event and city, open to all, 24/7, for free!
It is a place where people meet, enjoy performances together, dance, receive make-up tips for their best Eurovision look, cruise through Rotterdam virtually, wander through iconic places and feel the vibe of the city!

It is clear that there is a lot involved in realizing a 3D platform. Especially when the creative concept has to be laid down in three weeks, and then a fully functioning 3D world can be built in four weeks. The underlying technology used for this is WebGL, which ensures that 3D graphics can be optimally displayed in all browsers. Three.js forms the 3D library and provides the right utilities and tools to easily work in WebGL. The frontend framework is formed by React.js: a JavaScript library for building user interfaces. Finally, the templates, or website pages, are built in the Azure CI / CD and served by the Cloudflare CDN. All in all, quite a few technologies together. But overall, the website is only 15MB - a remarkable achievement for such a large platform.
The CMS also plays an important role in the development. By using Contentful, editors were able to adjust the content accordingly. For this we have used Contentful. This turned out to be a successful addition. This means that editors have the option to adjust content accordingly. Certainly in the current reality, where it is difficult to think ahead with the ever-changing measures, this comes in handy. At one moment the audience may not be physically present, the next day, the number of physical visitors allowed changes and the line-up changes accordingly. All this requires a system that easily moves with the real world - a digital twin of the Eurovision Village that is well linked to the 3D environment.
