WebXR AR Black Bar at Bottom After Recent Chrome Update

Hello, I’m experiencing a viewport issue with WebXR AR applications on my Samsung Galaxy S10. When entering immersive-ar mode, a black bar remains visible at the bottom of the screen, corresponding to the space normally occupied by the Android navigation bar (though the navigation buttons themselves are not visible).

This issue appeared a couple of weeks ago and affects:

  • My own WebXR AR applications built with Three.js
  • Other WebXR AR demos that previously worked correctly
  • Apps that haven’t been modified in years

Questions:

  • Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

  • Could this be related to Chrome 142?

  • Has anyone found a workaround or fix for this issue?

Many thanks!

I can confirm that’s related to Chrome version 140 and above

This is a recent Chrome design change. In version 140 and above, the bottom address bar no longer sits flush with the very bottom of the screen, which makes it look less immersive compared to version 139.

At the moment there’s no setting or Chrome flag to put it back. The only options are to stay on 139 or send feedback to Google (Menu > Help & feedback > Send feedback) so they know users prefer the old look.
