Thickness map , attenuation properties(attenuation distance, attenuation color)

I have a question regarding the thicknessmap, i am not able to see the thickness map without adding properties of attenuation when i added attenuation properties such as color and distance than my output was clear and i was able to see that

so, is it necessary to always use this property in order to see the thickness map clearly that is my question.

I would think of the .thicknessMap as data that may be used by other volumetric properties. There are multiple such properties and others could be added. Attenuation is one, transmission is another, see this example while adjusting ā€˜transmission’ and ā€˜thickness’:

Similarly iridescence can use its own, separate, thickness map. If subsurface scattering is added at some point in the future for MeshPhysicalMaterial, I imagine that would use a thickness map too.

Thank you for the response, it is helpful

so according to the link that you have shared i have realized that the thicknessmap alone can also work without adding any properties
