A scroll-driven story in eleven chapters. A girl and her grandfather bring the last herd down from the hills in 1891, a storm hits the high pass, and a grey mare out of an old legend leads her home.
Every frame is drawn live as a vertical-bar halftone. Three.js renders the animated horse herd through one shared WebGL renderer. Each frame is then copied onto the halftone canvas, where every cell’s bar width follows the tone underneath it.
Some details:
- Chapters dissolve into each other cell by cell, and the paper and ink colours drift to each chapter’s palette as you scroll.
- The only colour on the page is warm light: fire and lamplight print in amber ink, everything else in two tones.
- The cells behind each caption are dimmed (or lifted on light frames), so the text always sits on quiet ground.
- There’s one WebGL context for the whole page, with GSAP and Lenis handling scroll.
The horse is the animated low-poly model from the three.js examples (originally from the ro.me project).
