Mycelium Incursion – an arcade shooter inside a spinning space colony (Three.js WebGPU, shipping on Steam)

Hi all! I’ve been building Mycelium Incursion, a full commercial game in Three.js, and I’m heading for a Steam Next Fest demo in February 2027.

It’s an 80s-style arcade shooter (think Defender and Robotron) set inside an O’Neill-style cylinder colony:Gameplay Video 750,000 units long, with the ground curving up all around you and a whole city overhead.

Some of the fun problems:

  • Rendering: WebGPU renderer (r174), instanced aliens and traffic, 60 fps on a MacBook Air with 200+ aliens on screen.
  • Living in a cylinder: “up” is towards the axis, so flight physics, the camera and every AI behaviour work in cylindrical coordinates. Flips, loops and barrel rolls included.
  • Video ads on a blimp: VideoTexture failed bind-group validation on WebGPU for us, so frames are copied to a canvas and uploaded as a CanvasTexture.
  • Desktop: packaged with Electron for Windows and native Apple Silicon macOS.

Happy to go into detail on any of it, and thanks to everyone here whose answers got me unstuck along the way.
