OutlinePass for child meshes

I am trying to use the OutlinePass example to outline meshes that can possibly be children of other meshes. I also stumbled across this thread https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js/issues/15075 where the poster had the same issue. So, how would I change the OutlinePass example to let my child meshes be outlined? I’m using the implementation from this example: https://threejs.org/examples/webgl_postprocessing_outline.html Thanks!
