satellites over your location

https://satellitevisualization.pythonanywhere.com/whatsup

Enter a latitude and longitude and the satellites overhead will show. It might take a second, it’s a pretty big API call on the backend.

At the start, satellites move in ~real time. Sun’s position is ~accurate.

When sped up, it’s fun to watch the geosynchronous line, satellites that don’t move wrt your location, and other patterns. Speed it up using your right or left arrow keys (or keys A and D)

That’s pretty impressive to see, how many birds are buzzing the skies.

Things I’d like to see:

  • option to freeze the animation, while retaining the ability to select/highlight a particular object.
  • “masking” particular groups of satellites by general purpose (i.e. GPS, Telecommunications, weather, military etc.)
  • an azimuth/elevation grid on the sky dome for easier orientation

The initial display of “NEW YORK” doesn’t change on input of lon/lat values.
