Progressive shadow - how to create "shadow mappable" mesh?

I’m really impressed with Johnathon Selstad’s progressive shadow example.

When I try to use it with other meshes, it doesn’t work as expected…

The glb used in Johnathon’s example won’t import to Blender.
I’ve tried adding a second set of UV’s but that made no difference.

Anyone know how to prepare meshes for this? Am I missing something?
