Fish Tank Plus: a living reef in three.js with a real 3D window effect

Update: this project has been renamed from Ultra Aquarium to Fish Tank Plus. The browser version now lives at https://fishtankplus.com and the Windows app is now available on the Microsoft Store: Fish Tank Plus - Download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

I’ve been building an aquarium for a while (originally a Windows screensaver that stretches across multiple monitors as one big tank) and I made a browser version in three.js so people can try it without installing anything:

What’s in it:

  • A reef with schools of fish, light shafts, caustics, bubbles and drifting particles, all adjustable from the menu (fish amount, swim speed, brightness, feeding)
  • Exponential fog and a custom shader or two to sell the underwater depth
  • “Enable 3D viewing”: it uses your webcam so the screen behaves like a window into the tank. Lean or move and the reef shifts like you’re looking into a real aquarium

Honest bit: I built it with a lot of AI help (Claude, ChatGPT and Grok) and it took a lot of tries to get the look right. It’s free with no ads. The Windows version (screensaver and live wallpaper, plus an octopus who lives in a cave and a Glass Tank scene with a shark doing laps) is at https://windows.fishtankplus.com and on the Microsoft Store. The source is up on GitHub but it isn’t open source, and the Windows app shares anonymous usage stats by default, which you can switch off on its About page.

Would love feedback, especially on performance on lower-end GPUs and anything that looks off with the water.
