matcaps are always great to stay cheap while maintaining nice looking effects.
Here is another trick in case someone is interested:
Native THREE.MeshMatcapMaterial
doesn’t provide correct alpha mapping. To fix the issue you have to change the shader code.
Shader chunk are already (too) convoluted, so I didn’t report it as ‘bug’. I’m too afraid it would add another layer to the whole system.
