Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this so excuse my unfamiliarity. The issue I’m having is I am trying to have 7 cubes in which they are translated vertically. Then they are rotated by 20 degrees with respect to each other. Then I need to exactly have the edges of the cubes touch. Wha…

This is actually a 2D problem. If you rotate a rigid body (shape, mesh, whatever) about a fixed point/axis, all its points are rotated about the same angle, like so (rotation about coordinate origin, for simplicity): [scetch] black square: initial state blue square: rotated about origin by 20° …

What does happen if you try with 45° instead of 20°? Does the result provide any clues? Does the mismatch depend on the angle between two cubes? If I had to do something like this, I’d chain the cubes, so they have their edges connected by design. The following demo does not resolve your problem, i…

The mismatch does depend on the angle because, if I do change the angle to 45, then I get the following. Chaining does seem to be exact answer I was looking for. May I ask how did you chain the cubes together? I’m a beginner so I can’t really tell where the chaining together comes into play, in the …

Pavel’s approach boils down to this: (1) Shift the geometry to move the pivot point from the center of the box to the lower left edge: var geometry = new THREE.BoxGeometry( 1, 1, 1 ).translate(0.5,0.5,0), The box will now rotate around that edge. (2) make each box the child of the previous one (…

Admitted, @PavelBoytchev ’s approach is a very elegant solution that avoids math (almost) altogether.

[image] Kevalv: how did you chain the cubes together? I’m a beginner so I can’t really tell where the chaining together comes into play, in the code. Each next cube added to the previous, thus the transformation of the previous one is applied to it. The cube geometry is shifted in such a way …

Yep following that logic I did get the corners to touch, I then scaled them, and I believe I did the hierarchy correctly, so that the cubes are now “chained” together. Now flipping this problem a bit. I want to animate the 20 degree rotation, that I did previously. let cubes = []; for (let i = 0; i…
