TRAX3D is a web-based design tool for model railways — but it goes far beyond drawing tracks.
The latest version of TRAX has been completely rewritten from the ground up, with Three.js as its core 3D engine.
Where traditional layout design tools often use 3D simply to visualize a 2D track plan, TRAX3D provides a true 3D editing environment. Users can lay tracks, sculpt terrain and build an entire miniature world around their railway.
Add trees, houses, roads, bridges, buildings and countless other details. Explore the layout from any angle and design not just where the trains run, but the world they run through.
Three.js turns TRAX from a track planner into a creative 3D world-building tool — entirely in the browser.
Congratulation with reviving this project, it will be exciting to follow its further development.
I have two suggestion which I think should be prioritised:
revamp of the user interface.
make the track creation a little more intuitive as I did struggle and had to consult the manual which was quite annoying as I just wanted to do a quick test - a possible solution to solve this is asking “what is the most important feature of Trax3D” and the answer is track laying, so I would say that selecting which type of railway track(s) to use should be mandatory when creating a new project.
Very cool
I notice you’re missing a resize handler on the window in the fullscreen 3d view.
Also I notice on the homepage it took multiple clicks to get looking at the 3d view.. you should feature that front and center with an embedded 3d view on the homepage, with one of the nice track designs!
I really like the look of the new user interface it is so much better now I think
Features I would like to see:
Is intellisense in search bars with auto filtering of items as this means less scrolling in menus like track model picking as well in the track selection menu.
Ability to add multiple pieces of the same track type like for example curved tracks - maybe add a small pop-up menu when clicking on the track end point where users can select the number of tracks to add (the menu should be off to the side in order not to obstruct the view)
A tooltip at bottom of the screen telling the users that they can add more of the same track by double clicking the end point of a track
Laying the same track multiple times in a row is already possible: make the dot where you want to put the first red, and keep double clicking the item in the list. I was thinking about a shortkey to do this. The other way is double clicking the next dot.
I will look into this, see what works best.
And for more ideas: please come and join the TRAX forum.
Wow, it’s cool to see another Three JS app with a model-railroading focus! I figured I was the only one. Might be an opportunity here for some interoperability … maybe export a layout from TRAX3D then import that into my iRunTrains to operate trains on it?
That really is a fun web app you have there. And I would be interested to see if we can add that as a feature. Please contact me through the website so we can discuss it further.
