Hi everyone!
I’ve spent the past few years learning about 3D and AI. I’ve finally decided to share a small community project idea: multiplayer Backrooms we could develop together. I’ve put together a playable starting point, complete with depressing carpet and a few surprises in the basement.
What’s already there:
- Up to a million cells to explore, in a 100 × 100 × 100 grid that reveals itself as you go.
- 100 levels measuring 840 × 840 meters each: about 0.71 km² per level, or 70 km² of grid area across all levels.
- 23 room models: six classic layouts, five kinds of stairs, ten pools, a room with three water slides and their landing pool.
- 18 object types, scattered around the rooms: a phone, bench, plant, armchair, coffee table, cleaning cart, wet floor sign, water cooler, water jug, photocopier, filing cabinet, archive box, noticeboard, folding chair, vending machine, TV, rolling TV stand and office chair.
- 64 textures for the rooms and furniture: 23 daytime versions, 23 nighttime versions and 18 for the objects.
- A shared day/night cycle and two types of creatures, still very rare.
- Each room bears the username of the first player to discover it, while remaining accessible to everyone else.
- Paint marks and moved objects persist, visible to everyone. Your mess becomes our problem.
- Up to 32 simultaneous players, directly in the browser, on desktop or mobile.
You can play the starting version here.
And here’s the first nasty little thing you might run into down there if you’re unlucky. You can already play around with it and try killing it. For the next creatures, post your images here: we’ll vote together.
I’d like to build what comes next with you. You can already suggest monsters, rooms or gameplay rules here. If enough people are interested, I’d like to aim for one update a week in my spare time.
I use generative AI for almost everything: code, 3D, textures, sound… That’s what makes this arrangement feasible: you suggest, we vote, I do the work. Your unpaid employee, specializing in damp real estate.
If the project interests you, just say so here, so I can tell whether it’s worth taking a little further.
