How to Avoid Decal Distortion on curves

Hi ive been working on a clothing visualizer and im trying to prevent distortion on the sleeves. I’ve tried:

  • Switching between canvas texture painting and decal projection

  • Even playing with triplanar mapping / normal-based projection

…but I still can’t get a clean, continuous projection across the torso → sleeve.

I think you need perfect uv-mapping on you model. It may be necessary to manually adjust the UV mapping in a 3D editor.

^ pretty much exactly this. you need a clean uv unwrap with minimal distortion.

To get it looking realistic.. you have to generate it the same way they use them at the factory. a flat template unwrap of the shirt, probably with separate islands for each sleeve, and front and back torso.. and then it’s basically just a matter of pasting your oriented/scaled/positioned decals into the texture itself. It takes some careful planning and setup to make a good “rig” for the process. The proper unwrap would look something like this:

…and a common technique for making clothes in a 3d modeller, is starting with mesh pieces that are shaped like the sections in that image, and welding the pieces together, and snapping the front and back pieces onto a mannequin.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t2WQJMoQDM
