Definition between Surfaces

I have created an extruded shape with a hole and textured it.

Within the hole is an angled plane which gives me the desired effect of a recess with angled base.

In the image below, you can easily see all the faces based on lighting and shadows.

But at certain angles some faces blend into each other and there is no clear definition like within the ellipse of the image below.

I have tried using different and multiple light sources, changed shadow map etc but wanted to know if anyone had a possible solution or idea of how to get better definition between these faces.

Thanks

That can be a problem in real life too. Builders often have to add little cues to avoid problems where surfaces seem to merge into one another. This includes painting curbs and/or adding non-slip strips (which you might want to do anyways if this is an angled marble surface on which people might walk, since wet marble is very slippery).

For a more minimal approach, I would suggest giving the vertical surfaces a slightly different color. If your light source is in a fixed location, you can make the colors lighter or darker, based on the position of the light source.

Thanks, I had not tried post processing. I will try and see if it makes a difference

Thanks, agreed. I have tried numerous light sources and colours but has not given the desire effect. I will try adjusting the shade of the vertical texture a fraction and see if it improves.

Sorted, was a simple case of darkening the sides texture by the smallest amount and making an adjustment to the shadow bias. Many thanks for the suggestions!

If you have a fixed light source you might be able to skip using shadows for that surface. Saves a little processing time. Using manual control is also helpful if you need to make an “artistic adjustment” to make things look the way you want. It’s all about fooling the eye.

Thanks again for the suggestion. much appreciated!
